Manufactured in 1885, this historic Winchester Deluxe Model 1873 is a factory-engraved presentation rifle inscribed to Sir Harry “Kaid” Aubrey de Vere Maclean (1848–1920). Maclean began his military career in the British Army in 1869 and later traveled to Morocco, where he became a military instructor and eventually a general and commander of the Sultan’s forces.
The rifle features near-full-coverage floral scroll and border engraving executed by renowned Winchester Master Engraver John Ulrich and bears his “J. ULRICH” signature. The left side plate carries the presentation inscription: “A token of esteem from the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. to Kaid Maclean Instructor General of the Moorish Army 1885.” The right side plate features an engraved buck-and-doe scene.
Additional embellishments include floral scroll engraving on the barrel, silver-inlaid bands at the muzzle and breech, and gold-plated trim. The rifle is fitted with a 24-inch octagon barrel chambered in .44-40 WCF, a Beach combination front sight, two-leaf rear sight, and combination peep sight. It is mounted with figured walnut featuring an H-pattern checkered forearm and straight-grip stock, with a trapdoor crescent buttplate containing a four-piece cleaning rod.
A factory letter documents the rifle’s configuration and records it as received at the warehouse on May 8, 1885, and shipped on May 19, 1885. The barrel also bears a later-added “One of One Thousand” inscription, noted as having been applied outside the Winchester factory by an unknown engraver.
