This unique Winchester Model 1894 Lever Action Rifle is an unusual cutaway demonstration piece, chambered in .32-40 and featuring a shortened 9 3/8-inch octagon barrel, walnut stock, and blue finish. Manufactured circa the early 20th century, the rifle was later extensively altered into its present cutaway configuration. The barrel, magazine tube, and stock were shortened, while the major components were carefully machined with viewing windows along the left side, allowing the internal mechanism and operation of the classic Winchester lever-action system to be observed.
Accompanying the rifle is an ATF exemption letter stating that it has been modified to such an extent that it cannot fire a projectile and is no longer subject to the provisions of the NFA. The rifle remains mechanically functional as a cutaway demonstration piece and shows some refinished blue, areas of light pitting and oxidation, along with minor cracks and handling marks to the walnut. An especially interesting Winchester display and educational piece, it also carries provenance from The Brandhorst Collection.
